Hello Bioverse,
I recently completed a pre-college course in neuroscience through Columbia University, and I wanted to share a bit about my experience since I’ll be posting more about it soon. The course was held online and served as an introduction to core concepts in neuroscience. It was taught by a PhD graduate, and I was struck by how much overlap there is between neuroscience and anthropology.
One particularly fascinating topic was the evolutionary tipping point in Homo sapiens, when a key mutation led to the modern brain structure we have today. Before this shift, attempting to communicate with early archaic humans would have been similar to trying to communicate with a gorilla.
As we delved deeper into the structure and function of the brain, I kept connecting the lessons to what I already knew about human evolution. It became clear to me how deeply intertwined neuroscience and anthropology really are.
I’m excited to share more about how this course has helped me better understand both fields—and how neuroscience has enriched my perspective on anthropology.
